Beijing Reaffirms Testing Moratorium After Trump’s ‘Underground’ Test Claims

Beijing has reaffirmed its long-standing moratorium on nuclear testing after Donald Trump accused China of conducting secret “underground” tests. China’s foreign ministry denied the claims, calling itself a “responsible” nuclear power.
Trump made the allegations on ‘60 minutes,’ claiming, “Russia’s testing, and China’s testing, but they don’t talk about it.” He argued the tests were “way underground where people don’t know exactly what’s happening.”
In response, China’s foreign ministry stated it has “abided by its commitment to suspend nuclear testing” as part of its “self-defence” strategy.
Trump used his unverified claims to justify a new U.S. policy, announced on social media, to resume testing “on an equal basis.” He claimed he “hated” the decision but was forced into it.
The move has sparked fears of a new arms race. Trump also claimed the U.S. arsenal was the world’s largest, positioning Russia as second and China as a “distant third.”
