Months of Silence, Then a Midnight Call: Ukraine’s Drone Specialists Race to Save American Bases

When Ukraine received a request from the United States for drone defense assistance, it came not after careful planning but in the middle of an escalating conflict with Iran that had already claimed seven American lives. Ukraine mobilized within 24 hours. The contrast between this urgency and the eight months of silence that preceded it says everything about the cost of the decision made in Washington last August.
Ukraine’s counter-drone capability has been tested in the most demanding operational environment in the world. Russian forces have deployed Iranian Shahed drones against Ukraine in quantities and with a frequency that no other military has experienced. Kyiv’s response — an integrated system of low-cost interceptor drones, radar networks, and trained personnel — has proven effective at stopping these weapons at a fraction of what conventional air defense systems would cost.
The August proposal to share this capability with the US was advanced by Zelensky personally in a White House meeting with Trump. The briefing materials were detailed and included a specific warning about Iran’s improving drone technology. The proposal recommended building “drone combat hubs” at American base locations in Jordan, Turkey, and Gulf states to create a regional defense infrastructure.
Trump’s positive response to the proposal was not matched by his team’s action. Internal skepticism about Zelensky’s motives contributed to the failure to follow through. The consequences of that inaction unfolded over the following months: Iranian drones struck American positions, killed seven US personnel, and imposed millions of dollars in interception costs.
Ukraine’s response to the eventual request was everything the earlier inaction was not. Specialists were airborne within a day. Teams deployed to Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. The defensive architecture Kyiv had proposed is now being built under live fire. It should have been built in August.
