President Donald Trump painted a picture of military success on Saturday while simultaneously acknowledging that the United States may need international backing to finish the job. He boasted in public statements that US airstrikes had effectively demolished most of Kharg Island, Iran’s principal crude oil export facility, while his social media posts appealed to China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the UK to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz. The contradiction between triumphant claims and calls for allied help was not lost on analysts watching the conflict unfold.
Kharg Island, located roughly 15 miles off Iran’s southwestern coast, is the facility through which Iran exports the vast majority of its crude oil. Its sustained damage or destruction would have profound consequences for global energy markets already destabilised by Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz since the war began on February 28. Trump had previously refrained from ordering the full destruction of oil infrastructure, citing decency, but warned explicitly that continued Iranian interference with shipping would force a change in that position.
Iran responded to Saturday’s strikes with characteristic defiance. Ballistic missiles were fired at the UAE, hitting near Fujairah’s major oil port and suspending loading operations at the globally important ship-refuelling hub. Dark smoke rose over the emirate’s coastline as Iranian military officials broadcast warnings for civilians near ports and US installations to evacuate. Iranian commanders threatened to strike any Gulf energy or economic facility with American ties, and the foreign minister called on Arab states to expel US forces from the region.
Israel conducted dozens of airstrikes inside Iran on Saturday, targeting missile systems and security infrastructure. At least 15 people were killed when an Israeli strike hit a factory in Isfahan. Iran continued firing rockets at Israel simultaneously. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth described Iran’s leadership as hiding underground and said the new supreme leader had likely been wounded and disfigured. Iranian officials confirmed Khamenei’s injury but called it minor. Analysts cautioned that despite leadership losses, the regime remained structurally intact and strategically coherent.
The war’s mounting costs were becoming impossible to ignore. More than 1,400 Iranians had reportedly been killed in sustained bombing. Thirteen Israelis and roughly 20 Gulf residents had also died. Lebanon’s crisis continued to deepen, with over 800 killed and 850,000 displaced from Israeli strikes on Hezbollah. The US embassy in Baghdad was struck by missiles overnight, and all Americans in Iraq were ordered to leave immediately. Six US service members died in a military aircraft crash in western Iraq. Analysts warned that Trump’s window to contain the conflict’s global economic fallout was narrowing with every passing day.
