European Countries Hold Firm Against Trump’s Hormuz Pressure Campaign

Despite an intensifying pressure campaign from Donald Trump, European nations have held firm in their refusal to deploy warships to the Strait of Hormuz, insisting that the right response to the crisis is diplomatic rather than military. Trump had repeatedly argued that nations relying on the strait’s energy trade bore a responsibility to help reopen it, threatening NATO with a grim future if his request was ignored. European governments, however, were largely unmoved, pointing to the absence of any shared decision to intervene and the lack of clarity around the conflict’s objectives.
Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz issued the most unambiguous refusal, declaring that his country would not contribute militarily under any circumstances. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius questioned the logic of the American request with characteristic directness, asking publicly what Trump expected from European frigates that the much larger and better-equipped US Navy had not yet achieved. Their combined statements reflected a German leadership that was both principled in its opposition and skeptical of the overall military approach being taken.
Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom maintained a deliberately open-ended position, promising to work on a plan with broad international backing without committing to any specific action. He acknowledged that reopening the strait was a global priority but insisted any response must be carefully coordinated. Trump remained unhappy with Britain’s cautious approach but appeared to retain hope that London would eventually contribute.
Italy, France, Greece, Japan, and Australia each declined to send ships, and the EU’s foreign ministers voted effectively against expanding Operation Aspides to the Hormuz region. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas confirmed there was no consensus for changing the mission’s mandate. Estonia’s foreign minister gave voice to a widely felt European concern by calling on the US and Israel to clearly articulate their strategic goals.
On the battlefield, Israel continued its campaign of airstrikes on Iranian cities, claiming to be operating according to a detailed multi-week plan. Iran launched missiles toward Israel that were intercepted and rejected ceasefire proposals. Drone attacks disrupted UAE oil loading and caused brief flight disruptions near Dubai. US military casualties climbed to 13 dead and more than 200 wounded, and rights organizations placed the death toll inside Iran at more than 1,800 people.
