In light of the recent Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, Gadi Eisenkot, the leader of Israel’s Yashar party, has dismissed the viability of a two-state solution. This development comes as Eisenkot also criticizes the government’s contentious E1 settlement plan in the West Bank, a project he believes could harm Israel’s standing on the international stage. The E1 plan aims to expand settlements between Jerusalem and Ma’ale Adumim, a move that might complicate territorial continuity between key Palestinian population centers.
The Israeli government has recently initiated a tender for over 1,000 new housing units in the E1 area, which has sparked significant international disapproval. The European Union has reportedly considered retaliatory measures should the construction proceed. Eisenkot’s stance highlights the tension between domestic settlement expansion and international diplomatic relations, emphasizing the potential consequences of pursuing the E1 project.
Criticism of the E1 plan is not the only concern Eisenkot has raised. He has also voiced disapproval of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, particularly in relation to the rising violence among settlers in the West Bank. Eisenkot contends that their policies have undermined the control of the Israel Defense Forces in the region, posing a threat to Israel’s national interests and its legitimacy on the global stage.
In response to Eisenkot’s remarks, Finance Minister Smotrich defended the E1 construction, asserting that such developments are crucial to preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state near Jerusalem.
