US and Central Asian Nations Boost Trade and Security Ties at C5+1 Meeting

The United States and five Central Asian nations have agreed to enhance economic and security collaboration, focusing on trade, energy, and regional stability, following the C5+1 Ministerial Meeting in Samarkand on October 19. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the foreign ministers of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan outlined a vision for a long-term partnership built on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

A joint statement from the meeting emphasized plans to boost regional connectivity, economic integration, and trade between the US and Central Asia. The countries committed to strengthening transportation networks and investing in infrastructure along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, which connects Central Asia with global markets. Efforts to improve customs procedures, industrial cooperation, and digital connectivity were highlighted as priorities, alongside increased collaboration in e-commerce and education.

Energy and critical minerals were identified as key areas of focus. The participants supported developing integrated supply chains, expanding mineral exploration, and increasing the production of higher-value goods. Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov proposed a strategic partnership in critical minerals, stressing the need for advanced technologies and investments to enhance Central Asia’s market access.

On security matters, the countries vowed to intensify efforts against terrorism and transnational organized crime, with particular attention to border security, human trafficking, and cybercrime. They reaffirmed commitments to nuclear security and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Additionally, cultural heritage preservation and expanded professional, educational, and cultural exchanges were included in the joint vision to deepen regional ties.

Rubio underscored Central Asia’s strategic importance as a historic trade crossroads and a growing destination for investment and exports. He noted that the C5+1 framework demonstrates Washington’s commitment to fostering peaceful relations. Saidov, assuming the co-chairmanship of the C5+1 Secretariat, expressed intentions to build upon past achievements and translate agreements into practical outcomes.

The meeting highlighted shared interests in strengthening economic connections, improving regional infrastructure, and expanding cooperation on security and strategic resources, reinforcing the commitment of the United States and Central Asian countries to a collaborative future.
