China Calls on Israel to Halt West Bank Settlements, Address Gaza Crisis

China has called on Israel to cease the expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank and to enhance humanitarian access to Gaza. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made these remarks during a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog at a conference in Azerbaijan, as reported by China’s Foreign Ministry.

Wang emphasized the importance of addressing what he described as a significant historical injustice concerning the Palestinian issue, advocating for a political resolution to the conflict. He highlighted the urgent need to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza, warning of the deteriorating situation there. Wang stated that China is prepared to collaborate with the international community to foster dialogue and pursue a peaceful resolution.

China has consistently advocated for a two-state solution, supporting the establishment of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. In addition to this, Beijing has been active in promoting Palestinian reconciliation and diplomatic efforts to ease tensions across the Middle East.

President Herzog, reflecting on the discussions, noted the focus on bilateral relations and the broader regional landscape. He reiterated Israel’s desire for peace while expressing concerns about security, particularly in relation to Iran and its regional affiliates.

The situation in Gaza remains precarious despite a ceasefire initiated in October 2025. Challenges such as Israeli airstrikes, displacement, and ongoing humanitarian issues persist, while progress towards furthering the ceasefire agreement has stalled amid reciprocal accusations of violations by Israel and Hamas.

This diplomatic exchange underscores ongoing international efforts to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, improve Gaza’s humanitarian conditions, and revitalize peace negotiations.
