Spotify Introduces AI Artist Labels, Excludes Them from Recommendation Algorithms

Starting in September, Spotify is taking proactive steps to manage the presence of AI-generated artists on its platform. The music streaming giant plans to introduce a new “AI persona” label that will appear on the profiles and track listings of artists identified as AI-generated. This initiative is part of Spotify’s broader effort to help users differentiate between genuine human performers and artificially created artist identities.

In addition to labeling, Spotify will exclude these AI personas from its personalized recommendation algorithms by default. This decision is aimed at safeguarding real musicians from being overshadowed by AI-generated content, which has seen significant growth in recent times. Spotify’s move underscores the company’s commitment to maintaining a platform that prioritizes authentic musical talent.

To ensure transparency, Spotify will allow artists to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated. However, the platform will not solely rely on self-disclosure; it will also employ human reviewers and AI tools to identify those AI personas that are not disclosed. This dual approach is intended to address the influx of AI-generated music and maintain the integrity of the platform.

The rising tide of AI-generated music has been evident, with Spotify previously reporting the removal of 75 million spam tracks within a year. This statistic highlights the substantial volume of artificial and low-quality content that inundates music platforms. As generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry, Spotify emphasizes the growing need for transparency, as listeners increasingly seek to understand whether the creators behind their favorite tracks are real or AI-generated.
