A recent gathering in Ljubljana brought together representatives from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) National Authorities of Eastern European Member States. The two-day event focused on advancing discussions around national legislation, capacity-building programs, and other pertinent issues concerning chemical safety and international cooperation. The meeting provided a platform for 18 delegates to exchange insights on the practical challenges and best practices associated with implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention, with an aim to bolster regional collaboration.
During the program, participants engaged in country presentations and reviewed the activities of the OPCW to date. Central discussions revolved around contemporary issues and challenges, with particular emphasis on the implications of artificial intelligence and the crucial role of academia in ensuring chemical safety and curbing the spread of weapons of mass destruction. These sessions were designed to enhance understanding and foster more robust strategies in chemical weapons prevention.
Slovenia, which plays a proactive role in the OPCW, adheres strictly to the Chemical Weapons Convention. This international treaty, signed by 193 States Parties, aims to eradicate chemical weapons and prevent their future use. The Slovenian Chemicals Office oversees the national implementation of the Convention, ensuring compliance by supervising industrial activities involving strategic chemicals and collaborating with the OPCW to conduct international inspections.
On May 12, Slovenia ascended to the OPCW Executive Council, the governing body tasked with promoting adherence to the Chemical Weapons Convention. Over its two-year tenure, Slovenia is committed to preventing the proliferation of chemical weapons and enhancing trust and security within the international community. Boštjan Peršin, speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs during the OPCW Regional Meeting, highlighted that Slovenia’s priorities on the Executive Council would include supporting the development of new technologies and advocating for the peaceful and secure application of chemistry.
Slovenia’s active engagement with the OPCW, exemplified by co-organizing the Regional Meeting, underscores its dedication to maintaining the highest standards of chemical safety, transparency, and the responsible use of chemicals for peaceful purposes. This approach not only reinforces Slovenia’s leadership on the Executive Council but also strengthens collaborative efforts to uphold international norms against chemical weapons.
