Netanyahu Condemns Houthi Missile Attack on Riyadh Airport Amid Rising Tensions

In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denounced a deadly missile attack by Houthi rebels on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport. The assault, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 12 individuals and injured over 300, has further intensified the ongoing conflict in Yemen.

Netanyahu condemned the attack as a “horrific terrorist” act and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. He also called for a unified international response to terrorism and underscored the necessity of safeguarding civilians and maintaining regional security.

The attack on the airport prompted Saudi aviation authorities to close the facility while conducting damage assessments and safety checks. This disruption affected civilian activities in Riyadh, leading to the suspension of in-person classes, with schools shifting to remote learning. However, a major international energy conference in the capital is still slated to proceed as planned.

The Saudi-led coalition, which backs Yemen’s internationally recognized government against the Iran-backed Houthi movement, has been locked in an intensifying conflict with the rebels. The Houthis have claimed responsibility for several attacks on Saudi airports and energy facilities, cautioning airlines and travelers against using much of the kingdom’s airspace.

In retaliation, the Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of launching strikes in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, resulting in the death of a child and injuries to several individuals. Saudi authorities have not immediately responded to these allegations.

The escalating conflict raises concerns over the security of civilian infrastructure and the potential disruption of shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial maritime route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Further escalation could jeopardize regional energy supplies and international maritime trade.

As tensions rise, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to speak with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, amid growing concerns about the prospect of broader regional involvement.
