Inside the Negotiation Room: How a ‘Basic’ Agreement is Being Turned into Peace

The Gaza peace process has moved from the political negotiation room to the technical planning table, where a “basic” agreement is now being painstakingly translated into a workable peace. This is the critical phase where broad principles become concrete actions.
The starting point was securing Hamas’s “basic” agreement to President Donald Trump’s proposal, a breakthrough that Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed. This political consent, which makes up the “90 per cent” of the deal, unlocked the door to the final, practical stage.
Now, teams are focused on what Rubio called the “logistical piece.” This involves creating a detailed, minute-by-minute timeline for Israel’s withdrawal to the “yellow line” and the corresponding release of hostages. Questions like “who moves first?”, “who verifies?” and “what are the routes?” are being decided.
This process is a test of trust and technical competence. The agreement from Hamas was “in principle,” and their good faith is now being measured by their cooperation in these detailed sessions. A refusal to agree on reasonable logistics would be seen as a rejection of the deal itself.
President Trump’s administration is overseeing this phase with a combination of encouragement and pressure. The hope is that by focusing on these practical, non-ideological details, the momentum toward peace can become irreversible, turning a “basic” agreement into a lasting reality.
